Chicago is known for its food scene, with multiple Michelin-starred restaurants and James Beard Award winning chefs. It can seem almost impossible to maintain a healthy diet when there’s such great fine dining as well as deep dish pizza, Italian beef, and Chicago-style hot dogs around every corner. If you’re looking for places to eat that won’t damage your diet, check out these healthy eating spots in the South Loop.
Start your day or refresh during your lunch hour with a stop at FruVé Xpress Juicery. This raw and organic juice bar uses whole fruits and vegetables to create cold-pressed juices, smoothies, and acai bowls. If you’re in a hurry you can pick up a bottle to go.
Japanese cuisine is one of the healthier fares, with its abundance of fresh seafood and grilled meats. You can dive into sashimi and nigiri at Umai Japanese Kitchen and Sushi. If you’re in the mood for meat, the Japanese Steak or broiled salmon are both good choices, and come with miso soup and salad. Of course, an appetizer of edamame is always a great way to start your healthy meal.
The Mediterranean diet is known for its heart-healthy benefits, and you can do your heart some good at Kurah Mediterranean. Their elevated Middle Eastern selections include a starter of red lentil soup with fresh carrots and parsley, a traditional Jerusalem salad of cucumbers, tomatoes, parsley, and lemon in a tahini dressing, and an appetizer of hummus or baba ghanoush. Healthy entree options are grilled kabobs, a shawarma platter, and seafood ceviche, to name a few.
When you’re looking to eat healthier you really can’t go wrong at Whole Foods. The South Loop Whole Foods is minutes away and located at 1101 S. Canal St. Not only do they feature a wide selection of organic produce, meat and other natural groceries, they also have prepared foods that you can pick up for a quick lunch or dinner.
