June is upon us and filled with great events. We’ve rounded some up and made them the subject of our latest blog, Things To Do in South Loop in June! Here we go…
We kick off with Manifest Chicago from June 1-4. Mayfest (Maifest in German) is the traditional German celebration of the arrival of spring. Maifest is still celebrated throughout Germany with the maypole (maibaum) decorated to show off the history and crafts of the local village or town. This 18th annual German festival features German foods, live music, maypole dance and other traditional German presentations.
The Chicago Blues Festival arrives at Millennium Park from June 9th-11th. The entrance is completely free and goes from 11am-9:30pm. It’s the largest free blues festival in the world and remains the largest of Chicago’s Music Festivals. During three days on five stages, more than 500,000 blues fans prove that Chicago is the “Blues Capital of the World.” This year you can expect Gary Clark Jnr, Rhiannon Giddens, Ronnie Baker Brooks, William Bell, Nellie Tiger Travis and many more.
There’s the monthly Randolph Street Market event which is held the last weekend of the month from Feb-Dec. The Street Market is a European-style bazaar with more than 200 vendors – all hand-picked by festival organizers – hawking an array of antiques, handmade items, and vintage goods. Both an indoor and outdoor event, the market features tented booths that cover the expansive parking lot and even more sellers inside the nearby Plumbers Hall. Serious antique collectors trawl the vast selection for hidden gems, while meticulous hipsters and affable groups of friends scour the racks of vintage clothes or check out vinyl records for rare imports.
On June 24th head over to Navy Pier for the 2nd Annual Pier Pride. It’s the largest Pride celebration outside of the Lakeview neighborhood, featuring a full day of live music, artistic performances, special programming, a parade along the lakefront and more.
Finally, be sure to check out the Chicago Taco & Tequila Festival held in Jackson Park on June 24-25. It’s the perfect summer combination! The tasty taco and blue agave plant liquor better known as tequila will be in the mix at this summer’s fest. Both traditional and exotic ingredient-stuffed tortillas will be smartly paired with tequila-infused cocktails ranging from the classic margarita to the trendier grapefruit-flavored paloma. The fest will also feature mixologists and a DJ. A $15 gate admission includes one free cocktail.
